The State Duma of the Russian Federation approved in the third reading a bill extending the deadline for filing a patent application from 6 to 12 months after disclosure of information about an invention, including at international exhibitions. The bill, submitted by the Government of the Russian Federation in July 2024, amends the Civil Code of the Russian Federation.

Extending the deadlines for filing patent applications will allow applicants to have more time to prepare and file applications for inventions in Russia, as well as to avoid refusals to grant patents due to publications in scientific journals, on the Internet, or demonstrations at exhibitions. The proposed amendments to the Civil Code have a reasonable and justified basis and are significant for the protection of intellectual property and stimulation of innovation in Russia.
